Demystifying Statistics and Probability

Develop your knowledge and skills in teaching statistical content

How do maths teachers face the challenge of probability and statistics in the classroom?

In this course, students will be asked to reflect on the changes to the curriculum, their knowledge of statistics and how it relates to 21st century learning. Statistical language and communication including digital approaches will be considered. Students will also have the opportunity to engage with and learn about existing and new content in the mathematics curriculum from Years 6 to 12.

This course has a four-week teaching period requiring a total of approximately 40 hours of learning. All course learning materials are available on demand.

What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of and skills with mathematical concepts and procedures related to statistics and probability
  • Demonstrate advanced reasoning, problem solving, fluency and understanding in the thinking, teaching, and doing of statistics and probability
  • Communicate probability and statistics concepts to target audiences, including through use of ICTs

  • Beliefs about probability and statistics in the modern world
  • Communication and language in probability and statistics
  • Statistics and probability in Years 6 to 10
  • Statistics and probability in senior curriculum
Assessment

To be eligible for a digital badge for this course, you will need to successfully complete an assessment which includes

  • Choose two concepts and map these according to the skills and knowledge students will need prior to encountering this learning, and where this learning will lead.
  • Record yourself teaching two of these concepts. Provide meta analysis explaining why that particular approach was taken and how it is effective for communicating the concept.
  • This optional assessment is due at the beginning of week 7
Course Credit

This Microcredential represents 0.25 units towards 1.0 unit of credit.

The Microcredential can be taken as a stand-alone course. Additionally, it can be combined with other Microcredentials offered by UniSQ to achieve a total of 1.0 unit of credit. Partial credit cannot be awarded. To be eligible for credit you must successfully complete a stack of UniSQ Microcredentials that, when combined, equal 1.0 unit of credit.  

The combined stack of Microcredentials can be used to apply for unspecified credit towards a program, provided the program rules allow it. To apply credit, you must first meet all of the program admission requirements and there must be elective space within the program and approval from the Program Director.
