This minicourse provides an understanding for the insider threat, and how it can be detected and mitigated is a critical objective to reduce cyber risk and a vital control for organisations. Students will learn about what insider cyber threats are, how to detect them, and how to mitigate against them.

What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Analyse information, concepts and theories related to human roles in insider threats (CO2)
  • Analyse and apply specialist knowledge related to managing human factors and behaviour to counter insider cyber threats (CO3, CO4)
  • Analyse, evaluate and apply sources of specialist human behavioural knowledge relating to cyber security knowledge, and how these can be applied towards improved cyber security controls (CO4)

Scott Sorley is Executive Director of ICT Services at the University of Southern Queensland. Scott is responsible for enterprise wide planning, coordination and delivery of USQ information and communications systems. Scott developed the Human Factors in Cyber Security course in June 2019 and has been teaching this course to postgraduate students since that time. He has a particular interest in enabling Higher Education and its mission to improve people’s lives and create value for society. Scott has a diverse IT background from developing web applications, building distributed database systems, designing networks and managing large IT teams.
