About the course
What will you achieve?

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

  • Differentiate the components and functional elements of GIS, and design and implement geodatabases suited to specific GIS applications
  • Explain GIS analytical techniques will be applied given the types of spatial features, data model, scale of measurement, and data types; and apply the techniques involved in map algebra and cartographic modelling
  • Use industry-standard GIS software package to process geospatial data to accomplish certain tasks and objectives; and critically evaluate the outputs and products of spatial analysis and modelling
  • Attain a basic comprehension of the Python scripting language and its object-oriented approach to facilitate GIS programming; be able to develop custom tools to facilitate the automation of geoprocessing tasks; and demonstrate confidence in utilising Python scripting expertise to access and manipulate GIS data effectively
What topics will you cover?
  • GIS data and geodatabases including the essentials of GIS; GIS data types; database fundamentals; and geodatabases fundamentals
  • Spatial analysis for GIS including spatial features, data types, and analytical operations in GIS; spatial pattern and arrangement, spatial statistics, and overlay analysis; spatial interpoldation and surface analysis; and distance relationships, proximity analysis, and network analysis
  • Spatial modelling for GIS including types and characteristics of GIS models; map algebra and cartographic modelling; issues and trends in spatial data analysis and modelling; and case studies
  • Programming for GIS including introducation to GIS programming; Pythin scripting for GIS; Python scripting for geoprocessing; and Python scripting or GIS data manipulation
Assessment

To be eligible for a digital badge for this course, you will need to successfully complete assessments which include:

  • Software based problem solving assignment. This assessment consists of three parts: Develop a geodatabase and populate the geodatabase with GIS data, use software to produce maps, and answer questions related to the use of GIS software.
  • Artefact using Python code: Model toolbox Custom tool Python source code Workbook Test of the source code produced
